Houdini Cluster by Smattila Houdini Cluster by Smattila
I stumbled into something interesting while studying Houdini 11. This is actually shaded voxel cloud in 3d space.

The stars are just a background but perhaps I'l change them to particles later and try an animation..will see. Too many projects going on atm but this thing is just too interesting not to research further :P

Edit: Did a little animation of similar scene. Shitty quality but I guess its okay for the first attempt :P [link]

Sweet nebula!
I've never used Houdini; perhaps it's time to at least have a little "looksee"....................
If only to be able to create another nebula type.
I've been playing with nebula creation in Vue also (as mentioned by priteeboy.deviantart.com/)..
And then there's Apophysis, Photoshop; the list goes on (well, for me, it actually stops there as I have more programs to learn.........................

Thank you! I updated the description with a link to a small animation of the same voxel based setup

Cool, I downloaded the free version of the program to get a idea of it. :P

Voxel? Now I swear programs are just making up words these days :lmao: This is really cool, you might have a nebula generator on your hands, it has a very natural photographic look to it

Well, voxels have been part of the 3D vocabulary since at least the 90s. I actually played a game back in 2000 that pretended to use voxels to generate the terrain...

Well it depends which programs you were exposed to. Lightwave users would have had their ears full of voxels around 2001 ;P

Yeah. It's basically a pixel in space that has volume :D I think that nebula generator reference might be very close to what this is. I tried several iterations and different colors, they all look pretty good.. Im going to do some camera movements next and see how it looks. Rendertime is a bitch tho..

Ahh, that makes sense. It's like the difference between an inch and a square inch then :D

I've found a way to get a decent nebula base out of Vue myself using just procedural materials that don't take too long to render since there's no volumetric effects or anything. Has made nebula creation a lot easier for me in times where I need one done in a hurry, but usually for my personal work I do them the old manual way. This here could really help out if you get commissioned for a nebula piece though, but I agree long render times are a bitch (I've been rendering the same scene for days now )

Yeah pretty much. I have tried similar things with terragen but I assume they render pretty much the same as vue. These however render in approx 15-20 minutes per frame @720p. It's not too bad. I can probably punch down the render time by optimization..Will have to experiment more
